Come on, Europe!

Background Although the European Union has a 60 % larger population than USA, its influence in the world is much smaller and steadily diminishing. There are increasing problems in our neighbourhoods as well as internal problems in many EU countries and future trends may further increase the stress on our democratic societies. In order to meet present and coming challenges it is necessary for Europe to change from a passive attitude where action is determined by the “lowest common denominator”, often zero, to a more forceful way of action. A…

Population growth or quality of life?

Recently I watched “Twin sisters”, a fantastic documentary about two identical twins from a Chinese orphanage who were adopted by two different families, one living in Sacramento, California, USA, the other in a small place called Fresvik in a Norwegian fjord. http://www.idfa.nl/industry/tags/project.aspx?ID=4efd1efc-7efa-4899-a544-8a7f47579655 In addition to the beautiful story of how the two girls and their respective families got into contact with each others and established close friendships, this documentary also displays the differences between the two societies the girls come to; the Californian city Sacramento with all its facilities and…

Russia and Europe

Yugoslavia broke apart and blood flowed. Now, 20 years later, the scattered parts are on their way into the European Union as full member states. We must be grateful that the breakdown of the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union went as smoothly as it did. Although there were bad incidents, it could certainly have become much worse. Even here prospects opened up for closer ties between EU and the former communist countries and Soviet republics. With one exception – Russia! Russia was different – and big! I suspect that…

Sports – the new opium of the people

Last year SkellefteÃ¥ AIK won the Swedish ice hockey league and even this year the prospects look fine as they are leading the series with good margin. I am not especially interested in sports and not at all in ice hockey, but find it better if my home team wins a game rather than their opponents. However, I wonder how true supporters look upon a lost game. Do they find a lost game worse than if 100 people are killed in the civil war in Syria? I like exercise and…

To be critical

At my matriculation examination 1960 in Norwegian essay writing I had to choose between 3 topics, one of them “To be critical – a weakness or a force”. I can remember how lucky I felt there in the classroom as this really suited me. The consequence of this “dream topic” was a better result at the exam than my mean results had been. My critical attitude has followed me through life with resulting advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of a critical attitude is the ability to independently analyze a situation…
