Europe is our values

For more than four years we Europeans neglected the ongoing conflict in Syria. Assad was allowed to terrorize his own people with poison gas and barrel bombs, without interference from neither Europe nor USA. Only after Daesh (IS) became a major force in the region, there came a reaction. And now, after terror attacks in Paris and threats in other places in Europe, several politicians show willingness to cooperate with any force, how evil it may be, just to get rid of Daesh. And seemingly with little consideration to our…

Abraham’s Children

Abraham Abraham is the first of the three biblical patriarchs and given a high position of respect in three major world faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Therefore, followers of those monotheistic religions can, in a sense, be regarded as “Abraham’s Children”. Even in the Bahá’í Faith Abraham is in high regard as a prophet. While Abraham by the believers is considered a historical person, modern research considers him, together with his son Isaac and grandson Jacob, as a mythological figure. In the chapter “Searching for the Patriarchs” in their book…

Bang! – – – – and a flat universe from nothing

Incomprehension and doubt Where do we come from and where are we going? These are questions we humans have asked in all times. Personally I can not see that I am here for a specific purpose and accept that my existence has arisen by coincidence. If a meteorite had not fallen unto earth 65 million years ago the dinosaurs might still have been here and no humans could have existed. And if my great grandfather had made just a little different path of life he would not have married my…

Come on, Europe!

Background Although the European Union has a 60 % larger population than USA, its influence in the world is much smaller and steadily diminishing. There are increasing problems in our neighbourhoods as well as internal problems in many EU countries and future trends may further increase the stress on our democratic societies. In order to meet present and coming challenges it is necessary for Europe to change from a passive attitude where action is determined by the “lowest common denominator”, often zero, to a more forceful way of action. A…

Restart

Dear Reader, You may wonder why it has taken me such a long time since I published my last post on March 13 till I return today with a new one. In each of April, May and June, I had trips of 10-14 days and then followed a fantastic summer with swimming and sunbathing. However often, on the beach or running in the woods, I thought of fall and what I then would write on the blog, so you readers have certainly not been forgotten. When writing a post for…

Population growth or quality of life?

Recently I watched “Twin sisters”, a fantastic documentary about two identical twins from a Chinese orphanage who were adopted by two different families, one living in Sacramento, California, USA, the other in a small place called Fresvik in a Norwegian fjord. http://www.idfa.nl/industry/tags/project.aspx?ID=4efd1efc-7efa-4899-a544-8a7f47579655 In addition to the beautiful story of how the two girls and their respective families got into contact with each others and established close friendships, this documentary also displays the differences between the two societies the girls come to; the Californian city Sacramento with all its facilities and…

Russia and Europe

Yugoslavia broke apart and blood flowed. Now, 20 years later, the scattered parts are on their way into the European Union as full member states. We must be grateful that the breakdown of the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union went as smoothly as it did. Although there were bad incidents, it could certainly have become much worse. Even here prospects opened up for closer ties between EU and the former communist countries and Soviet republics. With one exception – Russia! Russia was different – and big! I suspect that…

Sports – the new opium of the people

Last year SkellefteÃ¥ AIK won the Swedish ice hockey league and even this year the prospects look fine as they are leading the series with good margin. I am not especially interested in sports and not at all in ice hockey, but find it better if my home team wins a game rather than their opponents. However, I wonder how true supporters look upon a lost game. Do they find a lost game worse than if 100 people are killed in the civil war in Syria? I like exercise and…

Global warming, Gulf Stream and Scandinavian climate

During the first years of climate debate croakers predicted a new ice age in Scandinavia as a result of global warming and reduced Arctic sea ice. The “pump” of the Gulf Stream is the so-called deep-water formation when warm surface water is cooled and ice is formed. After ice formation the cold water with a higher salt content will sink as it has a higher density than the incoming warmer water. They predicted that less ice would reduce the power of the pump, thus leading to colder weather. It was…
